Edward Bingham (1829-1914)

The Edward Bingham collection at Braintree Museum.

Edward Bingham was a remarkable potter. Born the son of a potter, clay was in his blood. He progressed from the utilitarian goods his father produced, creating ornate and embellished pieces which show his love of history, archaeology, nature and Hedingham Castle where he lived.

The potter’s art is often trial and error, but self-taught Bingham persisted at his craft and experimented with different types of clay, glazes, firing techniques and decorations. The Museum has a large collection of fine examples of his sometimes weird, but wonderful creations.

This gallery has been made possible through funding provided by AIM and the Arts Scholars Brighter Day Grant.
